Descriptions:
Houdini FX offers a powerful and accessible 3D experience with its procedural node-based workflow, while also providing tools to simulate fluids, destruction fx, pyro fx, grains, fabrics, and crowds.
Characteristics:
Fully procedural
Houdini is built from the ground up to be a procedural system that allows artists to work freely, create multiple iterations, and quickly share workflows with colleagues.
Node-based workflow
In Houdini, each action is stored in a node. These nodes are "connected" to networks that define a "recipe" that can be modified to refine the result and then repeated to create similar but unique results. The ability of nodes to store and pass information, in the form of attributes, along the chain is what gives Houdini its procedural nature.
Artist-friendly tools
While nodes are what make Houdini unique and empower it, there are many window and bookshelf tools that allow for friendly interactions with the viewport. Behind the scenes, Houdini creates the nodes and networks for you. Houdini allows artists to explore different creative paths because it is easy to fork into a new node to explore alternative solutions.
VFX and simulation VFX
artists gravitate toward Houdini because its procedural workflow is ideal for creating sophisticated particle and dynamic simulations. Effects are often designed to react to actions that take place in a shot, and a procedural solution “automates” these reactions, giving studios more creative control and faster response.
Shooting and multiple iterations
Houdini enables you to make creative decisions deep in production as changes made to Houdini nodes cascade through the network to create a new and unique result. This directionality is preserved throughout the creative process and can be used to make last minute decisions that would be too costly in a traditional CG pipeline.
Pipeline in a Box
Whether you're setting up a shot or building a game level, Houdini lets you create tools that can be reused many times during a project's lifecycle. Rather than simply reacting to issues and problems, you will be able to plan ahead and visualize and refine your pipeline.
Asset creation tools
A great benefit of Houdini's node-based approach is the ability to encapsulate node networks into custom, sharable nodes. Create these digital assets without writing any code and then share them with other Houdini artists.
With Houdini Engine, open assets in other applications such as Autodesk Maya, Autodesk 3ds Max, C4D, UE4, and Unity with the asset procedural controls available for editing in the host application.
Features:
Cinema and TV
Create more shots on tight deadlines while achieving cinema-quality results with Houdini's procedural node-based workflow. Experience unprecedented levels of flexibility and control to enhance both your creativity and productivity.
Game Development Game
developers are facing a growing demand to build huge immersive worlds populated with vast amounts of content. To achieve great gameplay while meeting deadlines, a procedural approach Houdini uses offers a smarter way to create quality games.
Motion Graphics
Designers, animators, and storytellers use motion graphics to create content that engages audiences with powerful and engaging visuals. Create a wide range of aesthetic and dynamic experiences using Houdini ™ and its set of node-based procedural tools.
VR
Virtual and augmented reality create a complete experience that takes the viewer to places they have never been. Houdini provides a powerful set of tools that makes it easy to create and manage the content used to populate these amazing digital worlds.
What's New:
Solaris
Solaris is a set of appearance, design, and lighting development tools that allow artists to create USD-based scene graphics from asset creation to final rendering. Solaris integrates with USD's HYDRA Imaging Framework to access a wide range of renderers such as the new SideFX Karma, Pixar RenderMan, Autodesk Arnold, Maxon Redshift, and AMD ProRender.
Destruction FX
Larger, blimp-artful destruction shots are now possible with Houdini 18's new tools. From guided simulations to SOP-level setups, VFX artists can create blockbuster effects faster than ever. Other enhancements include a more realistic chipping algorithm, support for easy fractures with custom meshes, and new soft restraint plasticity attributes.
Pyro FX
With the addition of a new sparse solver, you can now create more impressive fire and smoke shots with detail where you need it. Houdini 18 includes a highly controllable solver for Pyro propagation, and all Pyro FX pipeline is available in SOP, including post-processing.
Adaptive Fluids
Houdini 18 includes an adaptive pressure projection for FLIP fluids that focused detail on the surface area and allows you to create faster simulations or create larger simulations that consume less memory.
Vellum
The Vellum Solver brings fast fabric tools to Houdini. In this release, Cloth continues to be a major focal point of these tools with key enhancements to mass / scale / topology invariance, collision robustness, and tangle recovery. The combination of speed and relative motion controls offer more stability during high-speed scenarios and Vellum also has new slide restrictions to create unique effects.
Smooth Bodies
Whether you're flattening some dough, squeezing some gummy bears, or adding jiggling to a stamp, Houdini 18 lets you choose between the VELLUM Solver for speed or the Finite Element Solver (FEM) for precision. FEM now offers a fast, accurate and stable Global Non-Linear (LNG) solver, a fully symmetric solver with a built-in Neo-Hookean material model, and robust recovery of partially penetrating tetrahedral meshes. FEM has also significantly improved the handling of fast-moving objects
Modeling
Houdini 18 includes UX enhancements to existing modeling tools and new tools that make procedural work easier. From the Bend tool to Bevel and Sweep, there are many useful enhancements to the tools you use every day. And Terrain now has advanced decking capabilities for more realistic results.
